Nutrition Info

Basically, I'm seeing lots out there on cancer nutrition. I'm using nutrition as a complimentary approach to my decision of mastectomy and chemotherapy. In general, I went the 80-20 Paleo path (80% clean eating; 20% indulgence) plus juicing daily and elimination daily (using chia seeds). I talked about my choices with my doctor who was supportive of a healthy approach to compliment the western medical treatment. I felt much better and sharper mentally eating healthy foods and exercising; anytime I ate sugar, by body ached.

In a nutshell, this is 'the gist' of some of the other methods out there:
  • Paleo = not specific to cancer but helpful (and a trail I started a week before learning I have cancer). Think eat anything in any quantity BUT no grains, dairy, legumes, sugar. Overall goal = rid of anything preserved. Eat fresh items and substitute grains for flours made of almond or coconut. Substitute dairy for coconut, including oil. Substitute sugar for raw honey. Lots of cookbooks and free recipes online by googling the words 'paleo _________' example: paleo bread, paleo pancackes, paleo pizza, etc
  • Gerson Therapy = think juicing 13 glasses daily + vegetarian meals + daily enemas for a two week period, then gradual normal vegetarian diet
  • Ketogenic/Metabolic Therapy = Various versions. Think paleo minus red meat; ratios 3 proteins to 1 carb per meal for various time periods
  • Cantin Ketogenic = think Ketogenic for a two week period with some specific guidelines (repeat every 6 months); (increasing ketones in body to certain level by eating a paleo type diet which has 3:1 to 5:1 ratio proteins to carb (low carb like kale, broccoli, etc) plus adding daily urinalysis strips to monitor ketones in an attempt to do what Burzynski is doing with his chemo alternative drug approach called  antineoplaston therapy. Example each meal has a meat (or vegetarian alternative) and a carb -- but 3 times more meat (not red meat) or 5 times more meat. This author used Atkins-like carb counting index.
  • Burzynski = think Ketogenic/Metabolic through the use of antineoplaston therapy (goal of altering cancer at cellular/DNA level by increasing ketones).

Kuvings Juicer: This one is masticating and a press at a super price compared to others that do the same thing (eg Norwalk = one gold standard juicer). Still looking into this one, but I went with the Breville which works for me ($150 at Bed Bath Beyond; $119 if you print their 20% coupon from their website)

Gerson Institute. The method was created by Max Gerson in the 1930s. It is based on detoxing the body, regulating potassium, eliminating cancer causing agents in our environment (eg pesticides, other chemicals, etc -- which translates to eliminating things like plastic containers that leach toxins into our foods and drinks, preservatives, processed foods, etc. Treatment translates to juicing vegetables and fruits and a vegetarian diet. I like the idea of juicing which is healthy. I think if Gerson were alive today he'd do chia seeds instead of enemas (I did chia since it regulated me fine).

Info on how to read urinalysis. I'm now doing this in an effort to raise ketones while also keeping all other things in check. I got this info from the Cantin Ketogenic book (the author used this diet and monitored her ketones in order to make sure she was within range. These strips also include ph which also is good to keep in check. This protocol is often used for those with other conditions.

Urinalysis for dummies (Cantin Ketogenic Diet = moderate to max (40 to 160) ketones goal via diet of 3:1 to 5:1 range of fats/proteins to low index carb like kale, broccoli, etc). If ketones low, eating coconut oil boosts numbers. Plus 1 lemon per cup three times daily for acid/alkaline balance. Hormones balanced. Two weeks strict adherence to this diet. Stay on less version thereafter (eg paleo), repeat every 6 months.
